BRIDGESTONE

Bridgestone Americas Holding, Inc is an international manufacturer with 38 production facilities throughout the Americas. The Nashville, Tennessee-based company was formed in 1990 when Bridgestone U.S.A. merged with The Firestone Tire & Rubber Company. We are the largest subsidiary of Bridgestone Corporation based in Tokyo, Japan.

Shojiro Ishibashi had a vision. He dreamed of supplying his nation's new automobile industry with tires developed and manufactured with Japanese capital and Japanese expertise. Ishibashi, who was born on the southerly island of Kyushu in 1889, was inventive by nature. At the age of 18, he refocused the family business on footwear. He developed rubberized footwear to replace straw sandals on the feet of Japanese workers. His invention was phenomenally successful, and even bigger things lay ahead for the young entrepreneur.

Ishibashi created Japan's first locally developed tires in 1930. He established Bridgestone Tire Co., Ltd., in 1931 to manufacture and market the new product. From the beginning, he held international aspirations for his business, and he christened the company with an English-sounding name. The surname Ishibashi literally means stone bridge. Reversing the order produced a name that the founder hoped would feel more familiar to people of all nationalities.

Bridgestone soon became the largest manufacturer of tires in Japan and expanded its business in other markets. The growth of Japan's automobile industry subsequently propelled us into the top ranks of the global tire and rubber industry. Following our 1988 acquisition of the Firestone Tire & Rubber Company, we became the largest in our industry.

Wherever vehicles carry people and goods, we supply world-class tires and support those tires with world-class service. We strive to define the standard for excellence in every tire category in every nation around the world.

Global product development supports our global marketing. Advanced capabilities in polymer technology and tire engineering at our Tokyo Technical Center support gains in tire safety and performance, and Bridgestone Group companies in the Americas and Europe adapt those advances to local needs at technical centers in Akron, Ohio, and in Rome. Engineers evaluate tire specifications at group proving grounds in every main market.

Our manufacturing is global, too. Bridgestone Group companies manufacture tires and other products at more than 100 plants in some two dozen nations. Those plants ensure reliable supplies of products for people in more than 150 countries. Rigorous quality control assures customers of dependable quality wherever they buy and use our products.

We make raw materials for tires, as well as manufacturing the tires. Crucial raw materials produced by members of the Bridgestone Group include natural rubber, synthetic rubber, carbon black and steel cord.

The story begins in the tropical climes of Southeast Asia and Africa. At plantations in Indonesia and Liberia, we produce our own natural rubber. It's just a small part of all the rubber that we use, of course, but the plantations are a hands-on opportunity to discover ways of making better tires.

In the same spirit, we make synthetic rubber, carbon black, steel cord, textile fabric and other vital materials. We transform those materials into top-quality tires for nearly everything that moves on wheels. In addition to cars, trucks and buses, that includes motorcycles, scooters, earthmoving equipment, agricultural machinery, subway trains, monorail trains and aircraft.

We market our tires through extensive networks of stores that have strong roots in their locales. At the heart of our sales networks are company-owned stores, including nearly 2,300 in North America and about 700 in Japan. Complementing those outlets are tens of thousands of independent retailers who market our tires around the world. Retailers who handle our products also provide a full range of service and maintenance to help customers get the most from their tires and vehicles.
